Ordering The Same Thing As The Person In Front Of Me.

As you may or may not know, there is a “challenge” circulating around the internet (or maybe just Youtube) right now, where you order the same exact thing as the person in front of you. I thought this sounded very interesting to try myself. I may not be a Youtuber (and I do not plan on becoming one) but I figured I could write a blog about it! Of the videos I have seen, everyone goes through the drive thru, which makes complete sense. I feel like it eliminates the weirdness of that person hearing you say “can I get the same thing as the person that just ordered?” People are weird so they can get mad at something like that. It’s just better to avoid that. Plus it’s a better surprise! Usually at the drive thru you can’t hear the person ordering in front of you, so it adds to the surprise. I did see one girl change it up a little for her dinner option. She went to a buffet and followed a woman around to get the same food that she put on her plate. I just don’t like the idea of that, and also what if the person notices you following. It was a good thought though, so you could always try it as an option!

For my “challenge”, I chose Starbucks. When I first pulled into the parking lot I didn’t think there was anyone in the drive thru. I had enough time to spare before work so I was going to wait. Luckily, there actually was someone there ordering. I pulled up behind a girl in her car. The barista who took my order told me the order back to me and I said that’s fine because regardless I have to eat/think whatever the person gets. I also heard a little bit of chatting right before I was given my total so I wasn’t sure if he knew what I was doing or not. Maybe he just thought I was weird, that seems more like it, lol.

So I pull up to the window and the guy tells me my order is $8.71, and I was a little confused. I had previously been told it would be $5.43, meaning I would just be getting a drink, or just a breakfast sandwich (but that would’ve been a bummer). With the eight dollars, that could mean that I would be getting both! For a second, I thought that for some reason it was doubled but that doesn’t make sense, since you know… mathematically, that doesn’t add up, lol. I ask for the receipt after he scanned my phone since I pay through the app. He hands me my receipt and it says something like a matcha iced tea and some kind of breakfast sandwich. For one, I was happy because even though I don’t like matcha, I was at least getting an iced drink. I’m reallllly not a fan of hot drinks, not many at least. I’m a “drink iced coffee in the dead of winter” kind of gal. Shortly after, the barista realized he rang me up for the wrong thing because when he got handed the cup, he looks at me, looks at the cup, and all you see in his face is, “shit!” hahahaha. I was happier with the other order and also a little confused still so I was just rolling with it. Honestly, it didn’t process to me that is someone else’s order. It’s not like they just made up a random order for me, they would’ve had to remake it. I will say, I did feel really bad that I was holding up the people behind me… He then questioned me, and the manager just refunded the money back to my account. Boring, but fine with me!

When the guy had repeated the order back I didn’t even think that the drink could be hot because my mind automatically goes to iced. If the order wasn’t read back I was going to keep my head down enough to not see the order being handed to the car but enough to know when to pull up to the window. Since I was read the order, I was looking but it was a surprise when I saw him hand her a hot coffee cup. Not a good one but you know, it’s good to try something new!

I waited to get to work to try out this drink that I was given. Because of the whole mix up I didn’t get a receipt for what I actually got so I was depending on the sticker they place on it. I should also mention, I’m the kind of person that needs SOME kind of flavor in my coffee. By that though, I mean I need to be called “vanilla latte” or “caramel macchiato”, like it can’t just be a squirt of flavor because that’s not enough. I know, I’m picky about things but who isn’t? Anyway, I read the label, “grande latte, triple, 1 pump vanilla, nonfat”. Third thing you should know about me, I really don’t know coffee that well… Like I’ll order a macchiato but I don’t actually know what that contains. That’s just an example of the many things I don’t know. So seeing that the label says triple and nonfat, I don’t exactly know what that means. Triple shot of espresso and no sugar would be my guess?

Time to actually taste this bad boy… YUCK! I was not a fan. I really hoped that pump of vanilla would give it a lot more flavoring than it did but in a grande, that’s just not enough. I think it’s interesting how everyone’s taste buds are different. That’s why this video concept is so cool, and a nice change of pace from the usual of what you would order. So since the challenge is to eat or drink whatever the person gets, I did. I was SO tempted halfway through to grab a cup of ice and some half and half but I didn’t. I stuck it out, and figured the taste might get a little better. It actually did, since I forced it on myself, it got a tad better each time I sipped it. Not something i would get on my own but fun to try at random!

OH! The best part of all of this… After a little while of drinking it, I remembered the manager that made the adjustment and refunded my card said that it would be on there automatically. I didn’t have enough time to check when I left the drive thru and forgot to check when I got to work, I check my app and I didn’t gain any stars, so I thought that was a little weird since I should’ve had at least five dollars worth. I check the amount on the card and it has the amount it had before I got there… Wait, my drink was FREE!? I guess he forgot to charge me for what I actually got because it took him a few minutes just to refund me. Unless he thought I was cute ;), just kidding! But, you never know, hahaha. I did think maybe it would take some time to process but it never did… I was SO thrilled to not have to pay for that drink! I really did luck out.

I know that I will be trying this sometime again soon! For me there are certain places that I won’t try it just because I know there are some things I won’t want to get. Starbucks seems like a pretty safe bet so that I’m will be another go at it! If you decide to try this out let me know how it goes by leaving a comment below! Also, leave a comment letting me know if I was right about the triple and nonfat!

See ya,
Samm 🙂
