Sunflowers, Kitties, and Coffee.. Oh My!

Yesterday, my mom and I took a trip out to Huntington. My mom came across something on the internet about a sunflower field out east but not too far so we figured why not? We’ve been wanting to take a trip together to a sunflower field so this seemed perfect. Plus, there is also a Shabby Tabby within ten minutes! I’ll explain what that is further into the blog, if you’re unsure. We knew we would have some time in between so we also planned to go thrifting! We made a nice day of it :).

Sunflower Maze.

We started our day at Manor Farm, the sunflower maze! When we arrived there was no one else there, which was nice. We had the whole place to ourselves. It wasn’t exactly what we expected though. When we first heard of it we thought that it was more like a open field of sunflowers but online it does say “maze”. So I guess that was kind of our misconception. It was a bit smaller than expected but the experience of it was nice regardless. Being surrounded by sunflowers naturally boosts your mood, it does for me at least. My mom and I went through twice, took some cute pictures, and just enjoyed the company of our favorite flower. 🌻

There are actual doors that you enter and exit from. The “exit” door is the cutest thing, I wish they did up the “entrance” just as nice! The exit is pictured above! It is free to go, although they do take donations. They also have a small notebook that they use as a guestbook for you to sign and add a comment about it. It was a cute setup! It’s the little things that also make the experience that much more exciting.

I guess because it is only the beginning of August, not all of the flowers are bloomed and there are vegetables in the process of growing. It is apparently a nice place to do some bird watching a little later in the season. We weren’t there to do bird watching but we did see a black and yellow bird, it was pretty cute. There were also some pretty butterflies, along with a bunch of bees (as I’m sure you could’ve guessed). I can still say that I am yet to get stung by a bee, so it was a successful day, haha. After we left I looked down at my pants and saw an inchworm, inching his way up my pants. We got a hint of nature life, and it was enough for being at a sunflower maze. It was the perfect place for a little summer adventure :).

Thrift Shop.

My mom and I had plans to go to this thrift store in Huntington that my mom has been to before. On our way to the thrift store we saw signs for garage sales and such. We passed by one that said “HUGE sale”, we had enough time until our reservation, why not take a look? And that’s just what we did! It turned out to be an organization that sells donated goods in order to give back to the community. This organization is called, Helping Hand Rescue Mission. Through this sale they make the money to further donate. So it was still thrifting, and we got some good stuff! We didn’t get to go to the original store but my mom said that this place was actually better than the other!

After making some great finds, we stopped for some pizza then headed over a little earlier but we were going to just hang around to waste time. Turns out there is a thrift shop neighboring the Shabby Tabby. We stopped in for just a few minutes because they really didn’t have such great things. Plus, the few things I looked at seemed to be a tad overpriced. That was in my opinion at least but it was still good to take a look around!

Shabby Tabby Cat Cafe.

The Shabby Tabby Cat Cafe… I heard about this through people at work and knew I NEEDED to go… Drink coffee, surrounded by cats? What could be better? I pictured this place to look just like any other unique cafe/coffee place that has a layout of tables and chairs with a waiter/waitress to serve you. Nope! It was two big connected rooms with a self serving area for coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. There are toys, treats, and kitties all around!

When we made the reservation, it seemed a lot more strict… it was as if you HAD to make a reservation but there were walk-ins. Also, you are suppose to only have one cup of the beverage you want but they didn’t say anything when I went back up. They had some things there for additional charge, like the treats. The treats were available to buy for 50¢. They also had ice pops and some pre-packaged desserts for us hoomans. Shabby Tabby also sells t-shirts, bags, stickers, etc. I bought myself four stickers because I just couldn’t resist bringing something home with me.

There are two locations, the one in Huntington (the one we went to), and one in Sayville. The kittens/cats that are at these locations are available for adoption. There was one kitten that was a debate but not really because I couldn’t take one home even if I wanted to. The cats had bow-tie collars to indicate if they were a boy, girl, or a little extra sassy… some didn’t have anything on just because they didn’t like it and took it off. The “extra sassy” kitties had red collars. I took that to mean that they get irritated easier than the other cats. I tried giving love to the one cat I saw with it because in my mind no one else does… A few of the cats swatted at me from petting them in a way they didn’t like but nothing nasty.

I came across one kitten that I fell in love with, and I could tell she loved me too… my little, Amelia. Amelia was the sweetest little thing but she was being so antisocial. I found out that her sister got adopted earlier that day… that makes me so sad. I know that of course not everyone can just adopt two cats at once but they came into the world together! I would’ve taken them both ! But like I said, I understand. She was hanging out in the backroom and the bathroom most of the time that we were there. I even scared some girl because I was sitting in the bathroom playing with Amelia… ooops. She was giving me so much love, purring, playing with me :). I miss her and I wish I could’ve taken her home…

Spending the day with our favorite things and being together, made for a puuurfect day ♡. Sorry, I’m corny and felt the need to say it, haha.

See ya,
Samm 🙂
